The £100 billion HS2 railway project is currently undergoing development. Its aim is to connect London and Birmingham and is regarded as Britain’s largest infrastructure project since our motorway development during the 1950’s and 1960’s. The project is estimated to involve approximately 140 miles of railway, hundreds of structures and more than 32 miles of tunnels.
As part of the programme, HS2 is building four new stations which include Old Oak Common in West London, Birmingham Curzon Street (City Centre), Birmingham Interchange (Solihull) and a terminus at London Euston.
The Old Oak Common station in West London is based between Paddington and Wembley / Acton and is set to serve as a major new railway station and transport interchange. It will link up the Elizabeth line, Great Western Main Line and Heathrow Express services, whilst connecting into main UK rail networks with trains reaching over 100 destinations. Once completed, Old Oak Common is anticipated to be the largest ever newly built train station in the UK.
KGUARD’s Role in the Development
As part of the innovative project, KGUARD has been instrumental in the development and completion of the first of six platforms at Old Oak Common station, by supplying Edge Protection Systems and Fall Prevention Systems. Our equipment has played a vital role in safeguarding workers whilst they undertake construction work at the new station.
Furthermore, our KGUARD team have worked closely with Old Oak Common Station work force team to identify a protection system which will work with existing lifting points in the structure and to provide a secure environment whilst the platform is being built.
On site, construction teams are using a wide range of KGUARD edge protection products including approximately 2000 Guard Barriers. The photo demonstrates the setup of our KGUARD Bridge system together with using Parapet Replacement Plates.
